- Explain to students that TC + BK = I means Text Clues + Background Knowledge = Inference
- Choose words from a text that have easily identifiable text clues.
- Have students read the the sentence containing the word. They will use the formula to make an inference as to what that word means. Students share answers.
- After students have shared answered, ask students to go back to the text to select the clues from the text that lead them to their inference.
- After students have successfully inferred and gathered text clues, students will now take ownership of the word by using it in an original sentence that conveys meaning.
