Text Features lesson:
1. Select a non-fiction text with many different text features.
2. Create a T-chart labeled, "Visual Features/Text Features."
3. Brainstorm with students about the different types of features they see as they glance over the text. Add anything else that is relevant that the students may not have said.
4. Have students put a post-it note by every visual or text feature they see.
5. Create an Anchor Chart with three columns labeled, "Feature, Purpose, What I learned."
6. Brainstorm with students what they believe the purpose of each feature is.
7. Model going over the text, finding a feature, thinking about the purpose of the feature, and writing down what you learned because of it.
8. Students will now go on, independently or in pairs, finding their text features and writing down what they learned on a post-it note.
